I believe the foundation to a safe city is a strong relationship between the police department and the community we serve. This project addresses interactions and builds trust between officers and our youth.
— Chief Brian Manley, Austin Texas
The Be SMART + Be SAFE program is a wonderful idea. When we come across kids, whether through our programs or on the street, this is a tool that can make a difference and build a bridge with the next generation. Our success depends greatly on being connected with the community in ways like this.
— Chief Bo Kidd, Buda, Texas
I am pleased that Be SMART + Be SAFE is touching the lives of young people. Young people are important to me and to everyone that wears the Travis County Sheriff’s Office uniform. It’s our mission to be fair, honest, respectful and to always be people you can count on in your time of need.
— Sally Hernandez, Travis County Sheriff

Creating Interactions characterized by mutual trust and respect

For law enforcement, Be SMART + Be SAFE is a first-of-its-kind community outreach tool. When passed from a member of law enforcement to a young person, BeSmart +Be Safe creates a crucial moment of:

  • Connection

  • Positivity

  • Encouragement

  • Education

The lessons in Be SMART + Be SAFE are critically important; however, many young people who find themselves in contact with law enforcement are not aware of the law or how to best interface with police.

82% of young drivers that took the Be Safe instruction said they gained knowledge that would make them “more confident” or “very confident” in interacting with Law Enforcement.
